I Didn’t Abandon Myself

By

For years, I used to hear people say,

“Be ready to be alone.”

“In the end, you have to face everything by yourself.”

I never understood that.

Because I was never alone.

I had friends.

Family.

Cousins.

A tribe.

There were always people around me.

So I thought that line was dramatic.

Exaggerated.

Unnecessary.

Until one day, on the most important journey of my life,

everyone stepped back.

Not slowly.

Suddenly.

It felt like I was pushed into an ocean full of sharks.

No warning.

No instructions.

No one turning back to check.

Just me.

And deep water.

At first, I was angry.

Angry at the abandonment.

Angry at the silence.

Angry at the unfairness of it all.

But that anger did something unexpected.

It made me swim.

Not gracefully.

Not confidently.

Desperately.

I didn’t know where the shore was.

I didn’t even know if there was one.

But I kept moving.

Because somewhere inside me, a voice refused to drown.

When I finally reached the shore,

people started asking,

“How did you survive that?”

“What changed you?”

“You’re not the same person.”

I didn’t have an answer at first.

I thought maybe time changed me.

Maybe circumstances shaped me.

Maybe pain hardened me.

But later, I understood.

I didn’t abandon myself.

That was the difference.

Everyone else may have stepped away.

But I didn’t leave me.

Even when I was scared.

Even when I was confused.

Even when I didn’t know what the next step was.

I stayed.

I gave myself strength.

I gave myself permission to keep going.

I refused to give up on me.

And that is what people mean when they say,

“Be ready to be alone.”

It doesn’t mean you will never have people.

It means there may be a moment

when the only one standing beside you

is you.

And that is enough.

Now, when I hear those old lines,

they no longer sound dramatic.

They sound true.

You may have a tribe.

You may have love.

You may have support.

But if one day it all disappears for a while,

don’t disappear with it.

Don’t abandon yourself.

Swim.

Even if it’s messy.

Even if it’s fueled by anger.

Even if it’s slow.

Stay with yourself.

Because the strongest anchor you will ever build

is self-trust.

And once you learn that you can survive

without leaving yourself,

no ocean feels impossible again.
