A Hug Is Not a Luxury

By

There is a video circulating.

A baby monkey, abandoned by his mother just after birth.

Humans gave him a small monkey teddy — something to hold, something to connect with.

He carries that teddy everywhere.

In the zoo, a group of older monkeys begin attacking him. Bullying him. Chasing him.

He runs.

And when he finally escapes, trembling and scared, he hugs that teddy tightly.

He presses his face into it.

He leans his head on its tiny shoulder.

As if it can protect him.

As if it understands.

I was not able to handle myself after watching it.

I don’t know whether the inner child in me cried,

or the mother in me cried,

or simply the human in me broke.

It shattered something inside.

That video is not just a viral clip.

It is not just “cute” or “sad.”

It says more than long speeches about attachment.

More than presentations about emotional safety.

More than any thesis on the importance of comfort.

It shows, silently, how much a mother matters.

How much a safe presence matters.

How deeply every being — not just humans — needs connection.

That baby did not need advice.

He did not need strength training.

He did not need to be told, “Be brave.”

He needed a shoulder.

Even if that shoulder was a stuffed toy.

When he hugged that teddy, it was not weakness.

It was survival.

It was instinct.

It was the body searching for safety.

We all do that.

When we are exhausted,

when we are scared,

when we are overwhelmed,

we look for something to lean on.

A person.

A hug.

A hand.

A presence.

A shoulder is not a luxury.

It is not a sign of dependency.

It is a biological need.

Having someone to hold you when you are trembling

does not make you weak.

It makes you human.

And watching that tiny creature cling to a toy for comfort

reminds me how powerful touch is.

How powerful reassurance is.

How powerful a safe zone is.

Sometimes we don’t need solutions.

We need arms.

That’s all.
