Today’s discussion is about emotionally unavailable people.

I think having emotionally unavailable people around you can literally drain you in any kind of relationship—whether it is a parent, a partner, a sibling, or anyone emotionally significant in your life.

Getting free from such relationships often comes at a huge cost. The emotional damage can be profound, especially when one person is emotionally invested while the other remains emotionally unavailable. In many such relationships, the emotionally invested person gradually becomes the victim of emotional neglect.

For a long time, I used to hear that psychologists mostly meet the victims rather than the abusers or the people causing the pain. Times have changed, and today a few people do recognize their unhealthy patterns and seek help. But I still feel that the majority of emotionally unavailable people neither realize nor fully understand the impact they have on the people around them.

That made me wonder—how are emotionally unavailable people born?

As I reflected on it, I reached two possibilities. Some people are raised by emotionally unavailable parents or caregivers and unknowingly learn the same way of relating to others. Others become emotionally unavailable as a response to trauma, hurt, or repeated emotional wounds caused by such people. What once began as a survival mechanism slowly becomes the way they live and relate to the world.

I think this topic is worth discussing because being trapped in a relationship with an emotionally unavailable person can itself become a form of trauma. It may not leave visible scars, but it can create the same emotional consequences seen in abuse—mental exhaustion, emotional neglect, chronic loneliness, self-doubt, and a deep feeling of abandonment.

Sometimes, the absence of emotional connection hurts just as deeply as the presence of emotional abuse.
