When you were five, what did you want to be when you grew up?
When I Was Five… I Just Wanted to Look at the Sky
When I was around five,
probably in LKG or UKG…
I don’t remember saying I wanted to be a doctor, or a teacher, or anything like that.
What I remember is…
the sky.
I used to sit near the window in my classroom.
And instead of paying attention to what was happening inside…
I was always looking outside.
At that big blue sky.
I was fascinated.
One day, I clearly remember—
We had some homework or craft to show the teacher.
Everyone was going one by one…
showing their books.
But I was somewhere else.
Lost.
I was looking at the sky…
at those white things floating.
At that age, I didn’t know they were clouds.
To me, they looked like cotton.
Because I had seen cotton at home—
when I got hurt, my mother used it to clean the wound.
So in my mind…
those were huge cotton balls.
Floating in the sky.
And I kept wondering—
How strong must the wind be…
to carry something so big?
That thought completely pulled me into my own world.
Until my teacher came.
She thought I hadn’t done my work.
But then she realised—
I was just… not there.
She asked me what I was looking at.
And I pointed outside.
She said—
👉 “That’s the sky… and those are clouds.”
And I remember thinking—
Cloud… cotton… same only.
Even after that…
I went back to looking outside.
And somewhere in that moment, I felt—
👉 “This is what I want to do.”
Not a profession.
Not a title.
Just…
to sit and look at the sky.
To wonder.
To imagine.
And honestly?
Even now…
nothing has changed.
I still love gazing at the sky.
I still look at clouds
and try to find shapes in them.
I still pause
when the sky looks different.
And maybe…
that five-year-old version of me didn’t have a “career goal”.
But she had something else.
👉 Wonder.
And I think…
I’m still holding on to that. 💛
