The Day I Chose to Try

By

I have always loved outside snacks.

If I wanted something sweet, I bought it. Simple.

Right now, I am on a strict sugar cut because of my health issues. Not randomly. Not casually. I had to. I don’t have another option. So when I crave sweetness, I usually buy dry fruit snacks or date barfi — something that fits my current diet.

That is how it has always been.

But today, one random YouTube video changed nothing… and everything.

I saw a video of black sesame seed laddus. When I checked the ingredients, I realized something interesting — almost everything was already in my house. Almonds. Walnuts. Cashews. Sunflower seeds. Dates. Raisins.

And I know these are good for hormonal balance. I do have hormonal issues. I know black sesame seeds are good for the body.

So then came the question:

Why am I not trying this at home?

Now, I am not someone who loves cooking. I don’t enjoy experimenting in the kitchen. That’s not naturally me. So I casually told my housemate auntie about it.

And she said, “Let’s do it.”

There was no overthinking. No dilemma. If she had hesitated, I probably would have gone and bought my usual outside snack.

But because she said yes, we started.

We roasted black sesame seeds until they popped. We added almonds, walnuts, cashews, sunflower seeds. Pumpkin seeds weren’t there, so we skipped them. We roasted, powdered, added dates and dried black grapes, and she shaped them into small, warm laddus.

And when I tasted it…

It was so good.

Soft. Nutty. Warm. Comforting.

And I felt really happy.

Not because I made something “healthy.”

Not because I avoided junk food.

Not because of some dramatic transformation.

But because I tried.

I didn’t waste what was already in my home. I didn’t automatically go outside for convenience. I participated in my own nourishment.

It wasn’t about random laddus.

It was about shifting from consumer to creator.

From convenience to connection.

All these years, I ignored walnuts and black sesame seeds. I don’t even like their taste. Even though I know how good they are, especially for hormonal health, I never chose them.

But today, I said:

Why can’t I try? Just once.

And maybe growth is not dramatic.

Maybe it’s not about completely avoiding outside food.

Maybe it’s just choosing to try — one small thing — one time.

And today, I felt proud of that.

The full credit goes to my housemate auntie. Without her willingness, this wouldn’t have happened. Sometimes change is not about willpower. It’s about someone saying, “Let’s do it.”

I just wanted to save this moment right here.

Those yummy ladoos
